MADRID 18 Jul 2010 Spain hosts concert as the main Mandela Day event

The 46664 Campaign plans a concert at the 100,000-capacity City of Rock as the main event of Mandela Day 2010. The body is named after Nelson Mandela's Robben Island prisoner number, and it focuses on aiding the humanitarian work of organisations associated with the iconic former political prisoner, South African president and Nobel laureate. Mandela Day 2010 is his 92nd birthday. The Campaign asks people to honor his legacy by donating 67 minutes to their chosen social cause.

According to the organizers, Mandela has been making an imprint on the world for 67 year's since he began actively campaigning for the human rights of every South African.

The line-up of performers at the concert has not been unveiled, and the date hasn't been announced. It is expected to be on or about Jul 18.

A Nelson Mandela Day exhibition, entitled "ct, Lead, Learn, Listen, Unite, Remember and Speak" will be held in conjunction with the concert. The title was chosen to highlight the values Mandela espouses. Sport, art, education, music and culture will be used to drive home the volunteering message.

Mandela's 90th birthday concert in London's Hyde Park in June 2008 started the movement towards elevating the elderly statesman's birthday to an international day. The first Mandela Day concert was held at Radio City Music Hall in New York in 2009. Stevie Wonder, Alicia Keys and Aretha Franklin were among the artists.

In February 2010, the former South African president celebrated the 20th anniversary of his release from Victor Vester Prison after 27 years confinement. Mandela's prison number was 466 and he was jailed in 1964, hence the 46664 of the Campaign. Its slogan is: "Awareness and Education through Entertainment." (Written Apr 2010)
