GENEVA 4-14 Mar 2010 80th International Motor Show to see usual makers?

Geneva's 80th International Motor Show looks set to go ahead, with a possible boost from a big anniversary year and spillover from the cancellation of the famed British International Motor Show in 2010. Because of the global economic downturn, vehicle sales are so slow that automakers are not willing to commit to the substantial cost of funding exhibits. As in 2009, the news from the 2010 show in Geneva and the many other auto shows around the world is likely to be about the automakers who decided not to exhibit rather than those that did.

The cancellation of the 2010 British show has only been halted once--by a world war. At least half-a-million visitors were expected to flock to the event at the ExCel centre in London's Docklands next year. Geneva is one of several other major shows that could benefit if the visitors hop over the Channel to Switzerland to see what's newin the automotive world.

Nissan Motor, for one, has announced it will not exhibit at the 2010 North American International Auto Show, and it skipped the same show in 2009. Nissan exhibited at the 2009 Geneva show, and hasn't yet announced if it will be present in 2010. Mar/09
