SOUTH AFRICA 4 Dec 2009 FIFA announces draw for 2010 World Cup football
The Fédération Internationale de Football Association, soccer's global governing body, announces in Cape Town the match-up of the 32 men's teams that have qualified for the FIFA World Cup competition in South Africa in Jun-Jul 2010. There is particular interest in games where where the teams of mutually hostile countries are matched up, such as the United States vs. Iran or North Korea, and in which countries 2006 champion Italy will meet.
Iran plays North Korea in a qualifying round in Jun 2009.
The announcement in Capetown will also be watched to confirm which teams qualified for a place in the competition. South Africa qualifies automatically. Africa will have a record six representatives in the 2010 running of the world's most watched sporting spectacular. Australia and Japan appear likely to qualify, and North Korea is considered in with a chance.
