PARIS 8-9 January 2009 President Nicolas Sarkozy hosts conference on financial crisis

President Nicolas Sarkozy and former British prime minister Tony Blair co-host a conference reflecting France's ambition to create a new model for capitalism in the aftermath of the global financial crisis. "New World: Values, Development and Regulation" comes just weeks after a Group of 20 emergency summit in Washington agreed on some general principles and more talks on dealing with the crisis. Initially billed as a summit, the Paris meeting has been downgraded to a conference with no decision-making responsibilities.

The downgrade is reported to be a response to Czech irritation at Sarkozy's determination to continue leading the assault on the financial crisis after France's European Union presidency ends. The Czech Republic takes over the EU presidency on Jan 1.

France is reported to want an economic government of eurozone countries led by Sarkozy after the French EU presidency expires in December in order to maintain momentum with tackling long-term solutions.

At the G20 summit on 14-15 Nov in Washington, 21 nations and four international organizations met for emergency talks. There were unfulfilled hopes of decisions on greater financial market regulation, global alignment of accounting standards and a bigger role for the International Monetary Fund. Nov/08
