It peaks on Feb 5, when more than 20 states hold primaries or caucuses. The Democratic and Republican presidential candidates who win in Iowa will hit New Hampshire with momentum. For some candidates, it could be the end of the dream. full story  SPACE 14 January 2008 NASA MESSENGER due to make first pass by Mercury NASA launched the Mercury Surface, Space Environment, Geochemistry and Ranging (MESSENGER) mission on 3 Aug 2004, and it is due to make the first of three flybys of Mercury on Jan 14. When it settles into the orbit of the planet closest to the Sun in 2011, it is expected to reveal the chemical composition of Mercury's surface, the geologic history, the nature of the magnetic field, the size and state of the core, the volatile inventory at the poles, and the nature of Mercury's exosphere. full story CUBA 20 January 2008 Cuba holds parliamentary election In January most of some 8.23 million voters will choose 609 deputies to the Cuban National Assembly for 5-year terms and 1199 to 14 provincial assemblies. "Like no other person he has called humanity to save the climate," according to the jury. full story INDIA 30 January 2008 India marks 60th anniversary of assassination of Mahatma Gandhi Mahatma Gandhi the pioneer of non-violence movement and the main architect of the independence of India was assassinated on 30 Jan 1948 on the grounds of Birla House in New Delhi. He is officially accorded the status of father of nation in India. A two-minute silence in memory of Gandhi is observed throughout India at 11 am. full story  MARS 30 January 2008 Asteroid could crash into Mars A football-field sized asteroid known as 2007 WD5 has a 1 in 25 chance of hitting the Red Planet on Jan 30, according to scientists from the Near Earth Object Program at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. VIENNA 1 February 2008 OPEC ministers hold special meeting The oil ministers of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries decided at their meeting in December to keep output ceilings steady. They will be reviewing that decision at their 147th Extraordinary Meeting in February, then again in March. The news in January that prices have topped US $100 per barrel is likely to be a big factor in their decision. NASA shuttle Columbia disintegrated 5 years ago On 1 Feb 2003 the NASA shuttle Columbia disintegrated on re-entry into the Earth's atmosphere over the state of Texas, with the loss of all seven crew. It happened as Columbia was ending its 28th mission, STS-107. Testing begins the next day, he said in August, and will continue through June. It will be a dress rehearsal for July and August when visitors to the 2008 Summer Olympics begin descending on the country. The world's first permanent international criminal court, it was set up to try the most serious crimes of international concern genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity. The 40th anniversary could revive the conspiracy theories surrounding his death. A memorial to him on the National Mall in Washington DC is under construction. Designed by Bolliger & Mabillard of Switzerland, the Behemoth will stand 230 feet tall, with the first drop at the near-vertical angle of 85 degrees and top speeds at 77 mph. The proposed charter, approved in a congress dominated by Morales' Movement to Socialism (MAS) party, seeks to give more power and resources to Bolivia's poor indigenous majority. Morales describes it as an effort "that allows us to re-found Bolivia." It will be the first ever landing in the arctic region of Mars. Once there, it will dig with a robotic arm into the ice and run laboratory tests to determine if the chemical environment beneath might favor microbial life. Russian and Ukrainian sailors will participate, and the Ukranian authorities are preparing for the city jubilee. It is timed to coincide with the 20th anniversary of the Free Mandela concert. That concert publicized demands for the release of Mandela, whose prisoner number was 46664, from jail. The proceeds from the concert will go to the 46664 charity, which raises money to fight AIDS.
